What is "Electronic Paper" ?

In the field of displays, "Liquid Crystal," "Plasma," and "Organic EL" are well-known types of display. These were developed as displays for TVs and personal computers to substitute the CRT (Braun Tube). Therefore, it may usually be said that they are displays for showing dynamic images (motion pictures) and photographs.

The Electronic Paper that Bridgestone Corp. has developed is also a display, but unlike the monitors for TVs and personal computers, it was mainly developed as a medium for displaying static images (still pictures) for reading. Apart from when rewriting the displays, Electronic Paper requires no electrical power to maintain the image. This makes it a display that is anticipated to become a medium that can be used in place of paper. This leads to energy-savings and it will be useful in reducing the strain on the environment.

Main Characteristics of Electronic Paper

Keeps the image in the memory until it is erased.
No electrical power is required to maintain the image. Since it saves energy, it will contribute to the future low-carbon society.
Reflective Characteristics
Because it is reflective-similar to paper-it doesn't require a backlight. As a result, a thin and simple structure in which the thickness at the display portion is less than 1.5 mm (in case glass substrates are used) was achieved.
Excellent Visibility
Because its angle of visibility is very wide, it is easy to read under direct sunlight and puts less strain on the eyes.
Flexible Display (Under development)
By using plastic film as the substrate, it is possible to make a display that is super-thin, super-light, unbreakable, and bendable. Electronic Paper's mobility and ability to be installed on curved surfaces make it a display medium that is completely different from the conventional displays used up to now.
